Students spend approximately 50-100 minutes in math instruction every day. The Math Makes Sense is the core resource used. It is an excellent program that allows the students to explore math in a variety of learning opportunities. The accompanying homework resource is also used. A photocopy of the unit that is being taught will be sent home in a blue duo tang. I typically assign 2 lessons of homework once or twice a week. providing ample time to complete and return the assigned work. Parents are encouraged to review the concepts with their child as well as assist in completing it if required. Although the homework is not assessed as part of the student's math grade, it is used for the learning skill of responsibility.
Problem solving is also a large part of the Math program. Each unit covers different problem solving strategies. Students are given opportunities to engage in class discussions and partnered activities to help them determine the most effective choices to solve math problems.
Our classroom is also supplied with an abundance of math manipulatives that are provided by the Greater Essex County District School Board.
